Junior Communications Consultant

Tell us a bit about yourself
I’ve been working in PR for four years, specialising in B2B cybersecurity. Before I started working in the sector, I worked in video editing and was part of the CNN World Sports team.
In my spare time, I’m very active. I love playing football, running and going to the gym. Whenever we’re playing, I also make sure I’m watching my first love, Arsenal.
What’s a normal working day for you like?
A normal working day for me starts the night before by writing out the priorities and meetings I have the next day. At the start of the working day, I go through all my emails and Slack messages to make sure nothing has been missed. Then I spend 30 minutes reading the latest news and sending out the Listening Stations. For anyone unfamiliar, these are daily updates we put together that cover the latest news relevant to each of our clients, including any coverage their competitors have received.
After that, I like to do my pitching for the day in the morning and content writing in the afternoon. If there is a need for social content to be created or scheduled, I also normally do this in the afternoon as well.
Where’s your go to lunch spot when in the office?
I try to bring my lunch to work to save money. I don’t think there’s anything better than a home-cooked lunch. I meal prep on the weekend for the two days that I’m in the office.
If you were to give your younger self a piece of advice before they started in PR, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to keep thinking outside the box. The best media opportunities I’ve secured have come from thinking differently about a pitching angle compared to anyone else.
I would also say that it is important to speak up. If you’re struggling with the workload or you don’t understand a task you’ve been set, it’s important to ask for help. There’s never any shame in asking for help.
If you were a superhero, who would you be and why?
Goku from Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. His mentality of rising to the challenge and always wanting to improve is something I like about him. Also, the fact that he tries to see the positive in everyone and sticks to his values and morals is something that I relate to.
What’s your favourite part of working at HN?
The culture at Hard Numbers is excellent. The balance has been perfectly struck between knowing when to knuckle down and get the work done and knowing when to celebrate and have a bit of fun. On top of the great culture, everyone genuinely has each other’s backs. No matter what you’re working on, there’s always someone willing to help, share what they know, or just give you a bit of encouragement.
What would your alternative career be?
Anything in sport or fitness, without a doubt. Whether that’s me playing football, training as a hybrid athlete, or becoming a personal trainer. I just love being active and can’t really imagine a life that doesn’t revolve around it in some way.
Believe it or not, I could also see myself being a train driver in an alternative career. I love trains and always have done. I always try to go to the Transport Museum in Covent Garden once a year. I think this love and interest in trains comes from the fact that my dad is a train driver and has been for as long as I can remember.
What do you enjoy the most about working within the cybersecurity sector?
Honestly, the fact that it never stands still. The sector moves so fast that no two days are ever the same. There’s always something new to get your head around. I find it exciting that I’m always learning, which, for me, is a big part of what makes a job worth doing.
